Okuma’s Evolution of Linecounter Reels: Inside the Cold Water A Round Reel

Over the past several years, Okuma has continued to push the boundaries of what anglers expect from line counter reels. With recent updates to both the Cold Water A and Convector series, the brand has reinforced its position at the top of the category by constantly refining, upgrading, and engineering with purpose.

Rebuilt from the Ground Up

Designed to meet the demands of serious open water anglers, these reels reflect a commitment to precision, durability, and performance in real world fishing conditions. Whether trolling for salmon, walleye, or targeting deep water species, reliability and accuracy are everything.

At the center of this evolution sits the Cold Water A Line Counter Reel, Okuma’s premium offering and a benchmark in the category.

Carbonite Drag System with Dry Technology

Now upgraded with a refined drag architecture for greater consistency and higher output.

The new design features a larger inner diameter, allowing the drag system to operate more efficiently under load. By concentrating contact on the outer edge of the key washer, the system creates more consistent pressure across the drag surface.

An added carbon washer positioned above the main gear increases overall drag output while also helping stabilize the system during extended runs. This reduces drag creep under load and maintains steady pressure when fighting fish.

The move to a fully dry drag system further enhances consistency by eliminating lubrication variables, resulting in a smoother, more predictable drag performance from start to finish.

Cross Pin Spool Shaft and Pinion Gear Engagement

Enhanced spool to gear engagement for tighter, more efficient power transfer.

This updated spool engagement design addresses a common failure point in wire line trolling applications. The new cross pin system creates a more positive connection with the pinion gear, improving overall engagement under load.

By providing double support to the pinion gear, the system increases stability and reduces internal play. The result is a more durable drivetrain that maintains alignment over time, delivering a solid, responsive feel when fighting fish and working heavy setups.

Improved One Way Clutch Bearing

Upgraded anti reverse system for a stronger, more connected feel.

The Cold Water A moves from a 6-pin design to a 10-pin stainless steel one-way clutch bearing, significantly increasing engagement points within the system. This results in reduced back play in the handle and a more immediate, responsive connection when setting the hook or fighting fish.

The added pins also strengthen the overall anti reverse system and improve long term durability under repeated load. Compared to the previous 6-pin system, which remains in the Convector, this upgrade delivers a tighter, more reliable performance for anglers pushing their gear in demanding conditions.

Lower Profile Body Design

More compact, better-balanced design without sacrificing capacity.

The 30-size frame has been reduced from 76.2 mm to 72.7 mm, creating a lower profile body while maintaining the same spool diameter and line capacity. This allows anglers to retain performance while gaining improved ergonomics.

By bringing the reel foot closer to the body, the design lowers the center of gravity, resulting in a more stable and balanced feel on the rod. The reduced gap between the spool and the frame also contributes to a tighter, more refined overall build.

The result is a reel that feels more connected in hand, reduces fatigue over long days, and delivers improved control without compromising capability.

Ultimate Stabilization - Gear Stabilizing System

New integrated system for improved alignment and durability.

A new one-piece hold plate design called GSS (Gear Stabilizing System), replaces the previous MSS (mechanical stabilization system) design, adding more stabilization points for gears and shafts. This increases durability, improves serviceability, and delivers more consistent long-term performance.

This new system also improves the stabilization points for the line counter shaft itself. This allows for the transmission gear to be more stable resulting in increased line counter durability and longevity.
